LED Exit Signs

LED exit signs can last up to 100,000 hours, provided that they are properly maintained. Most "light emitting diodes" displayed in exit sign generate wavelengths of red light or longer. These are relatively low energy wavelengths, so you don't need as much power to emit them. This is one of the primary reasons why most emergency exit signs are red in color--it's cost effective, energetically speaking.

property owners and managers want to minimize maintenance chores. If they were to use blue LED exit signs, they would have to change the batteries more often and spend more money on power. Most people believe that all exit signs are red because of an industry wide aesthetic preference. As you can see now, the reason why red LED signs are popular has to do with the fundamental physics of wavelength energy.

LED exit sign circuitry can vary significantly from manufacturer to manufacture, however. The placement of resistors, the voltage source, and the level of conductivity of the circuits can all impact performance. Usually, LED manufacturers will list their specs along with their signs, so you can work with your electrician to calculate how much power each sign will require.

Although short term economics may suggest that cheaper exit signs are the way to go, the truth is that battery and bulb replacements can add up over the years. If you invest in quality emergency exit signs up front, the costs even out when you extrapolate them. Plan ahead by working with your building inspector to make sure that your signs are up to code.
